Calvary in Banská Bystrica
A place of relaxation and recharging – this is also the Calvary in Bystrica. The chapel lies at the foot of the extinct volcano Urpín. It is a popular place of visit and rest for Banská Bystrica residents and tourists.
In 1689, crosses and the first stops were erected on Urpín. In 1714, 7 stops were built. However, these were not the Stations of the Cross as we know them today. The Calvary itself is in the Baroque style and dates from the 18th century. It is an important architectonic and historical building of the town. There is a precious lime avenue near the Calvary.
The planting of the linden avenue dates back to 1722. However, in 1731 it was almost entirely replanted, as the original one was destroyed by fire. The so-called Urpín alley thus became part of the historic Calvary. It consisted of 71 protected trees of various species. The majority of them – 59 – consisted of a large-leaved lime tree, 9 – horse chestnut, 2 – white acacia, 1 – field maple. All trees are about 250-300 years old.
