Kremnica Town Castle
The town castle is a complex of medieval buildings from the 14th – 15th centuries, protected by a double fortification, which is connected to one of the best preserved town walls in Slovakia. The dominant feature of the complex is the late Gothic Church of St. Catherine, the patroness of the town, which was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century.
The town castle is a national cultural monument. The castle hill is one of the oldest inhabited sites of the town. The town castle consists of a complex of medieval buildings from the 14th – 15th centuries, protected by double fortifications, which are joined by some of the best preserved town walls in Slovakia. The dominant feature of the complex is the late Gothic Church of St. Catherine, the patroness of the town, which was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century. The Renaissance tower of the church provides a spectacular view of the panorama of the ancient town and its surroundings. The oldest architectural monument of the area and also of the town is the ossuary from the beginning of the 14th century. In the circular basement of the building there is an ossuary.
The museum also offers art-historical exhibitions to the visitors of the Town Castle: the Baroque sculptures in the Town Hall of the Town Castle, in the North Tower the exhibitions From the archaeological research of the castle and Defence of the town, in the Small Clock Tower the Kremnica bells and bell ringers.
The museum prepares various cultural events for the public, which try to bring visitors closer to the riches hidden in its collections in an engaging way. Traditional events include the May Night of Museums, organized on the occasion of International Museum Day. In the summer months, visitors can look forward to a series of night tours called Summer Nights of the Muses. For music lovers, concerts of various genres (organ music, classical music, jazz) are held in St Catherine’s Church.
