National Cultural Monument Kalište
At the foot of the Low Tatras lies the village of Kalište. It is marked by the bloody history of the events of the Second World War and is currently classified as a national cultural monument.
March 18, 1945 was written into Slovak history. The settlement of Kalište was one of the centers of the so-called Partisan Republic. Due to the help of the partisan units, the settlement was burnt down by the Nazis on that day and 13 inhabitants were murdered. A total of 42 houses ended in devastating flames. Life in the village, the only one, has not been restored to this day.
The village belongs to the extended exposition of the SNP museum (The Slovak national uprising museum). Reconstructed are 2 houses, a small bell tower and the foundations of the burnt houses. A memorial is also part of the exposition. During the anniversary of the SNP, former residents and their descendants commemorate the memory of the fallen on the spot. In 2008, the SNP Museum made available a nature trail called „How did Kalište residents live„. It consists of 17 information boards, which are placed throughout the National Cultural Monument.
Entrance to the area of the National Cultural Monument Kalište is free. The expositions are open for visitors from May to September every day except Monday from 10:00 – 17:00.
If you are interested in a professional lecture, please contact the museum 5-6 days in advance on this website (click).
ACCESS
Kalište is located 30 km from Banská Bystrica (direction Slovenská Ľupča, Moštenica). The road leading to the area is paved but be aware of its reduced quality. Therefore we do not recommend coming by car during winter and early spring. You can reach Kalište also by hiking or cykling trails for example from the village of Baláže or Donovaly.
