Pustý castle
Beautiful ruins of Pustý castle are one of the largest castles in Central Europe. In the past it was a royal castle in Zvolen, today it gives an opportunity to archaeologists and is one of the ideal places for easy hiking. Since 2022, the castle boasts a new viewing platform.
Pustý hrad stands above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers at the top of the Javorie mountain range. It has two parts: Upper and Lower castle. As the ruins were almost not visible from the town of Zvolen, part of the wooded area of Upper castle was removed. Although these are ruins, they surprise visitors with their generous size, which is comparable to the more famous Spiš castle. It occupies an area of more than four hectares and pleases the tourist’s eye with a magnificent view of the town and its surroundings.
History of the Pustý castle
In the 12th century, a royal castle was built on the site, where the royal Komitat of Volhynia resided. A century later, the Upper and Lower castles were fortified. In the southernmost part of the fortification of Upper castle, a passage tower gate was built, which is still one of the typical features of Pustý castle today. The residential tower of Lower castle, which ranks among the largest residential buildings in Central Europe, was also an exceptional building. At the time of the Turkish danger, a watchtower, called a “vartovka”, was built on the castle. After building the gothic castle in the centre of Zvolen (today’s Zvolen castle), Pustý castle lost its importance. Destroyed by fire in 1452, it turned into ruins.
Excellent opportunity for a trip
Not a fan of strenuous hikes and want to take a trip with the kids? A hike up to Pustý castle will be just right for you. The nature trail (renewed in 2021) leads to the castle with a total length of about 3,9 km. There are several access routes. From the winter stadium, follow the blue marker and the easy trail up through Lower castle. For families with strollers and for cyclists there is an asphalt and partly gravel path. There are several benches and fire rings along the trails, so reward yourself for the climb with not only a breathtaking view, but feel free to have a small picnic. On weekends you can refresh yourself in the bufet Kolibka na Pustom hrade, near Lower castle.
A new lookout was added to Upper castle in 2022. It is located at the highest point of entire Pustý castle. Thanks to the panels with panoramic photos, you will be able to recognize the surrounding mountains and hills.
