Museum of Coins and Medals
One of the oldest museums in Slovakia.
The Museum of Coins and Medals was founded in 1890 by the archivist Pavol Križka as a museum of national history. Later, it was transformed into a numismatic department, which has made it a part of the National Bank of Slovakia since 1994. The rich collection of the museum contains more than 90 thousand objects from the field of numismatics, medal making, regional history and fine arts, which are divided into several expositions located in different buildings.
One of the exhibitions is the unique numismatic-historical exhibition of Líce a rub peňazí (the Faces and Reverse of Money). On five floors of the late Gothic burgher’s house, in which the exhibition is located, it presents the history of Kremnica, the platitudes in Slovakia and the Kremnica medals. You will learn about who and when the Kremnica mint was founded, what other guilds were active here and what the life of the townspeople was like. You will learn about the history and development of different types of currency from pre-mint, Celtic or Great Moravian to contemporary banknotes and coins. You will be able to admire the work of the Kremnica mint, rare coins, minting machines, and objects related to money, such as purses or coin jewellery. Last but not least, you will be impressed by the valuable collection of Kremnica medals from the Renaissance to the present day.
