Špania Dolina
Come and discover the famous mining past of central Slovakia in the village of Špania Dolina. Apart from walking around the village and its surroundings, there are other places that offer many ways to spend your free time.
The dominant feature of this mining village, which certainly does not escape the eye, is the original early Gothic Church of the Transfiguration from 1254. It is reached by a remarkable wooden covered staircase with 162 wooden steps. Additionally, in Špania Dolina, you will find typical 19th-century miners‘ houses. They are plastered with clay and whitewashed with lime, with wooden shingle roofs.
The village was famous throughout Europe for its rich copper ore deposits. In fact, its historical significance is evidenced, among other things, by the fact that even Christopher Columbus carried copper on his ships. Moreover, the famous painter Sandro Botticelli used the green colour from Špania Dolina.
We recommend a walk along the mining trail with beautiful views. It will lead you to the places of the past glory of mining history – shafts and tunnels hidden in the surrounding forests. During the summer months, the mountain slopes are ideal tracks for mountain biking, while in the winter they are perfect for cross-country skiing. In 20 minutes on the steeper trail you can find the resort of Šachtičky.
