The Leaning Clock Tower

The Leaning Tower is an inherent dominant feature of Banská Bystrica Square. It is a popular tourist spot for visitors to Banská Bystrica thanks to the view it offers of the square, the adjacent surroundings and the mountains.

The building was begun in 1552 in the Renaissance style, but only to a height of 20m, in the 17th century it was added in the Baroque style with a clock. In 1761 it was rebuilt in its present form after a fire. It served as a watchtower and town clock, and at one time it also housed a short-lived prison.

A bugler had his place at the top of the tower, announcing all hours, alarms, and festive events. During its „life“ it has changed several names, such as Green, after its green roof, or Libra, because it stood next to the city weighing scale building. It got the name Leaning Tower because of its 68cm deviation from the vertical axis, which occurred due to the disruption of the tower’s statics in the 19th century.

Today, however, it is no longer leaning and has been stabilized. You can reach the top of the tower by climbing the 101 wooden steps and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view.

The Clock Tower is currently open on request at the Information Centre. In case of bad weather, the Clock Tower is CLOSED.
