The Barbora route
Barborská cesta is the longest educational and cognitive route in Slovakia. It connects mining monuments and attractions in central Slovakia. The route is divided into sections between villages and can be walked or cycled. The route is 182.6 km long, the circuit starts and ends in Banská Bystrica.
The name implies that the route is linked to St. Barbara – the patron of pilgrims. The route is thus dedicated to places that are connected with mining history not only of Slovak but also of European importance. It consists of 9 stages, at the end of each stage there is a possibility to spend the night. Longer and shorter stages alternate during the journey. The whole circuit can be completed in 9 days. It is generally recommended to start with the first stage Banská Bystrica – Staré hory and continue in order, but the route can be adapted to your own preferences. There are 29 symbolic stops on the Barbora Trail as St. Barbara died at the age of 29. These are places that are significant in terms of mining, historical, natural, religious, cultural and technical values and are worth stopping at. Throughout the journey you can collect and record stamps in a book and at the end of the journey with all the stamps you will receive a certificate of completion of the Barbora Route.
