Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Banská Bystrica

The church is the oldest church in the city. It belongs among the most valuable sacral monuments of the town and is an integral part of the historical castle area of Banská Bystrica.

The construction of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Banská Bystrica began in the 14th century. It lays on the foundations left from the original castle church.

From its construction to the present day, it has undergone several reconstructions and devastating fires. Notably, one of the fires that made its history was the one in 1500. Rich German miners took part in its reconstruction, thanks to which it gained the nickname of the German church among the locals. As a result, it was rebuilt in the late gothic style. Later, Another fire also hit the church in 1761 and destroyed the main altar by Master Paul of Levoča. However, a second piece of Master Paul’s work survived, namely the second altar in the side aisle with the chapel of St. Barbara. During this period, the church was rebuilt in the baroque style and so it can be seen even today.

There are several unique historical relics in the parish church. These include a one-piece bronze baptismal font from the workshop of Master Jodok, the original vault or the oldest preserved epitaph in the town. All these relics are located in the chapel of the church, dedicated to St. Barbara – the patron of miners. Finally, it is also worth mentioning the magnificent Baroque interior decoration of the entire church.
